Leonard Orban, numit de Traian Basescu consilier prezidential

imagesCA1URZBCPresedintele Traian Basescu l-a numit pe fostul comisar european Leonard Orban consilier pe probleme de Afaceri Europene in cadrul Administratiei Prezidentiale, potrivit decretului publicat luni. Orban a detinut portofoliului Multilingvismului in Comisia Europeana, el fiind primul comisar european al Romaniei. Leonard Orban este fratele liderului liberal Ludovic Orban.

Intre anii 1993 si 2001, Leonard Orban a fost consilier parlamentar pentru afaceri europene si internationale al Parlamentului Romaniei.

In perioada mai 2001-decembrie 2004, detine functia de negociator sef adjunct cu Uniunea Europeana, pentru ca apoi in perioada decembrie 2004-aprilie 2005 sa fie negociator sef al Romaniei cu Uniunea Europeana.

In anul 2002 a fost decorat de catre Presedintele Romaniei, Ion Iliescu, in gradul de Cavaler al Ordinului National „Steaua Romaniei”, distinctie acordata pentru contributia adusa integrarii Romaniei in NATO

Din decembrie 2004 este secretar de stat la Ministerul Integrarii Europene unde coordoneaza pregatirea Romaniei pentru aderarea la Uniunea Europeana si, din aprilie 2005, pozitia Romaniei referitoare la statutul de observator activ la Uniunea Europeana.

In octombrie 2006, Leonard Orban a fost nominalizat drept candidatul Romaniei la functia de  comisar european. Varujan Vosganian si-a retras atunci candidatura in urma scandalului izbucnit din cauza informatiilor aparute in presa ca ar fi fost colaborator al Securitatii.

La finalul mandatului de comisar, Orban parea reticent la o implicare in mediul politic de la Bucuresti, insa doritor sa isi continue cariera europeana dar si sa fie prezent la nivel national, unde sa explice chestiunile europene si implicatiile pentru Romania ale deciziilor care se iau la Bruxelles.
